EX-MILITANT LEADER FARAH DAGOGO PICKS ADC TICKET FOR RIVERS GOVERNORSHIP RACE
In a significant development ahead of the 2027 Rivers State governorship election, former militant commander and ex-House of Representatives member, Hon. Farah Dagogo, has clinched the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ticket as the party’s candidate.
With the Ikwerre ethnic nationality currently asserting strong political dominance in Rivers State under the influence of FCT Minister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, the Riverine Ijaw ethnic group has now positioned itself as a major contender. Dagogo’s emergence as the ADC flagbearer has effectively set the stage for what promises to be an epic three-way political battle among the state’s three major ethnic blocs — Ikwerre, Ogoni, and Riverine Ijaw.
Dagogo secured the ADC governorship ticket during the party’s primary election held in Rivers State. His victory was announced by the Chairman of the ADC Rivers State Governorship Primary Electoral Committee, Dr. Agu Bryan, in the presence of committee members and representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The development is already generating fresh political calculations across the state, as the ADC seeks to establish itself as a credible alternative amid deepening divisions within the traditional political order. Rivers State politics has long been dominated by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC). However, the lingering crisis between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his political benefactor, Minister Nyesom Wike, has created cracks within the PDP, fueling defections and realignments.
Against this backdrop, the ADC is positioning itself as a reform-driven platform capable of attracting dissatisfied politicians, youths, and voters seeking alternatives to the established parties.
Born on November 29, 1982, in Port Harcourt, Dagogo holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology. He rose to prominence as a field commander of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) during the Niger Delta militancy period before accepting the Federal Government Amnesty Programme in 2009.
He later transitioned into politics, serving first as a member of the Rivers State House of Assembly representing Degema Constituency, and later as a member of the House of Representatives for Degema/Bonny Federal Constituency under the PDP in 2019.
Widely regarded as outspoken on issues of governance, political accountability, and Niger Delta development, Dagogo has consistently criticized the culture of godfatherism and excessive control by powerful political interests in the state. He enjoys considerable grassroots support, particularly among youths and former agitators in the riverine areas.
His political profile gained further prominence during the 2023 governorship race when he emerged as a leading aspirant before being caught up in a crisis that led to his arrest during the PDP governorship screening exercise in Port Harcourt in 2022.
Political observers believe his candidacy could significantly influence voting patterns by pulling protest votes, especially from disillusioned youths and residents who feel marginalized. His strong influence in riverine communities is also expected to boost the ADC’s visibility in areas that have historically complained of marginalization and underdevelopment.
In recent months, the ADC has intensified grassroots mobilization across the 23 local government areas through congresses and stakeholder engagements. Party leaders emphasize transparency, internal democracy, youth empowerment, security, and institutional reforms as core pillars of their strategy.
However, analysts note that the ADC faces significant challenges, including limited financial resources, weak statewide structures, and the entrenched dominance of the PDP and APC. Without strategic alliances, the party risks splitting opposition votes rather than mounting a serious challenge.
Nevertheless, many political watchers agree that Dagogo’s emergence has injected fresh momentum into the 2027 race and heightened pre-election intrigues. If the ADC can sustain internal unity, attract influential defectors, and expand its appeal beyond the riverine axis, it could evolve into a major deciding force in the battle for the Brick House.
Party officials have described the primary that produced Dagogo as transparent, peaceful, and credible, expressing optimism about his chances in the forthcoming election.
