NDC DEPUTY GOVERNORSHIP CANDIDATE DR. MICHAEL NWIELAGHI: THE FIRST-CLASS LAW GRADUATE STORMING RIVERS POLITICS
From Marketing Scholar to HYPREP Boardroom Strategist, First-Class Lawyer and NDC Deputy Governorship Candidate

At a time when political parties in Rivers State are assembling personalities with the capacity to attract voters across ethnic, professional and geographical divides, the emergence of Dr. Mike Barieenee Nwielaghi as the Deputy Governorship Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presents an interesting political proposition.He is not entering the 2027 Rivers State governorship contest merely as a politician.He comes with a profile that combines business administration, marketing, academia, environmental governance, community leadership and law—and, significantly, he has now added a First-Class LL.B. degree to that impressive academic portfolio.Indeed, the First-Class claim is no longer merely a campaign biography or newspaper description.
The official Rivers State University record confirms it. The university’s published list of First-Class Graduates for the 37th and 38th Convocations lists “Nwielaghi Barieenee Michael” under the Department of Jurisprudence & International Law, with a remarkable CGPA of 4.59 and the 2024/2025 graduation session.That official university record provides perhaps the strongest available verification of one of the most remarkable aspects of Nwielaghi’s biography.
In December 2024, National Network Newspaper had reported that the HYPREP Board of Trustees Chairman had obtained a First-Class Bachelor of Laws degree from Rivers State University, recording his CGPA as 4.59 and attributing the confirmation to the university’s Senate.The report further stated that he had passed the prescribed examinations covering the period of 2020/2021 to that of 2023/2024 academic sessions.
The achievement subsequently attracted commendation from the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), which described his graduation with First-Class Honours in Law as having been confirmed by the Senate and Governing Council of Rivers State University.
For Nwielaghi, however, the law degree represents more than another academic qualification.It completes a remarkable cycle of lifelong education. His academic journey began with a B.Sc. in Business Administration and Marketing, followed by an MBA in Marketing and a Ph.D. in Marketing from the University of Port Harcourt.After building a career around business, marketing, administration, scholarship and public-sector responsibilities, he returned to the classroom and pursued law.
And he did not merely graduate. He graduated with First-Class Honours. The significance of that achievement becomes clearer when viewed against the demands of his professional life.While pursuing his law degree, Nwielaghi was simultaneously carrying significant responsibilities associated with his public and professional engagements, including his role in the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project.
That combination of demanding public responsibilities and academic pursuit has become one of the recurring themes in accounts of his achievement.
THE HYPREP CONNECTION
Nwielaghi’s public profile received considerable prominence through his involvement with HYPREP—the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project, established to address the devastating environmental consequences of oil pollution in Ogoniland.As Chairman of the Board of Trustees of HYPREP/Ogoni Trust Fund, he occupied a position at the intersection of environmental remediation, community expectations, public administration and development financing.
The Ogoni clean-up programme is one of the most consequential environmental interventions in the Niger Delta.Its responsibilities include environmental remediation, restoration of polluted communities, provision of potable water, livelihood restoration and engagement with communities affected by decades of hydrocarbon pollution. Nwielaghi’s participation in the programme therefore placed him in an unusually sensitive public-policy environment.He was not simply operating in a political office. He was dealing with an issue that has remained at the heart of Ogoni’s struggle for environmental justice and sustainable development.
His HYPREP experience has also given him exposure to the complexities of government-community relations, project implementation, environmental policy and development expectations.
THE OGONI FACTOR
Nwielaghi is from Buan Community in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, making him an Ogoni son. That identity is politically significant. Ogoni has for decades occupied a distinctive position in Rivers State’s political history because of its environmental struggles, demands for political representation and campaign for equitable development.Nwielaghi has been associated with Ogoni socio-political organisations and consultative structures, including the KAGOTE Consultative Forum.
His political engagement has therefore developed against the backdrop of the broader Ogoni question: how can the people convert their population, resources, political consciousness and strategic location into tangible development and stronger representation?
His present political assignment provides an opportunity to test whether his experience can be transformed into a wider political programme beyond Ogoni.
FROM POLITICAL ORGANIZING TO THE NDC
Nwielaghi’s political journey predates his current NDC assignment. He has been involved in Rivers State political activities and has been associated with different political platforms.In February 2025, The Nation newspaper described him as a former Rivers State chairman of the defunct Alliance for Democracy (AD) and reported his involvement in Ogoni political mobilisation.
His movement across political platforms illustrates another dimension of his political career: he has operated within the competitive and often fluid environment of Rivers State politics.
Now, as the NDC Deputy Governorship Candidate and running mate to High Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs, he faces perhaps the most consequential political assignment of his career.The question is no longer simply whether Nwielaghi is qualified. The question is whether his qualifications, experience and political networks can be converted into electoral strength and victory.
THE FIRST-CLASS LAWYER AS A POLITICAL ASSET

While Business administration exposes him to organisational management. How will its huge economic resources translate into opportunities for ordinary citizens?What will be done about insecurity? How will education and healthcare be strengthened?
What is the future of the Niger Delta’s environment? How will oil-producing communities benefit more directly from development?And, perhaps most importantly for Nwielaghi, what lessons has he taken from the Ogoni environmental experience that can be applied to the entire Rivers State? These are the questions that will transform his academic biography into a genuine political test.
THE NDC CALCULATION
The choice of Nwielaghi as Lulu-Briggs’ running mate can also be viewed from a strategic perspective.The NDC joint ticket brings together the political and business profile of Lulu-Briggs with Nwielaghi’s Ogoni identity, professional credentials and public-sector experience. That combination seeks to speak to different constituencies within Rivers State.
Nwielaghi’s Ogoni background could strengthen the ticket’s appeal in the state’s oil-producing communities, while his professional and academic profile could appeal to voters looking for technocratic competence.But political mathematics is never that simple.
A running mate must demonstrate that he can mobilize beyond his immediate constituency.He must be able to communicate the party’s message.He must possess the political discipline required of a prospective deputy governor.And he must convince voters that he is capable of becoming a dependable partner in government—not simply a name on the ballot.
THE ROAD AHEAD
For Dr. Mike Barieenee Nwielaghi, therefore, the 2027 Rivers governorship election represents the intersection of education, professional experience, Ogoni identity, environmental advocacy and partisan politics.
His First-Class law degree has added a striking new chapter to a career that had already included business, marketing, academia, community leadership and HYPREP responsibilities.The official RSU record now settles the question of whether he actually graduated with First-Class honours in Law: yes—RSU lists Nwielaghi Barieenee Michael among its First-Class graduates, with a CGPA of 4.59.
The bigger question, however, cannot be answered by a university transcript.It belongs to the electorate.Can the First-Class lawyer, marketing scholar, technocrat and Ogoni son turn academic excellence and professional experience into political excellence and good governance?
That is the real examination awaiting Dr. Mike Barieenee Nwielaghi.And this time, there will be no university examination script.The people of Rivers State will be the examiners at the election day with their ballot papers to determine what the results will be.And who occupies Brick House Rivers State seat of political power come February 6th, 2027.
