
SENATOR ALLWELL ONYESOH’S EXPANDING INFLUENCE AS HE EYES 2027 RE-ELECTION

As Nigeria marked Labour Day 2026, attention has turned to the profile, political trajectory, and legislative contributions of Allwell Heacho Onyesoh, the Senator representing Rivers East Senatorial District in the 10th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Born on December 26, 1960, Senator Onyesoh is a seasoned Nigerian politician whose public service career spans education, sports administration, and national lawmaking. A graduate of the University of Jos, Class of 1982, he first distinguished himself in academia before transitioning into governance, where he has remained a consistent figure in Rivers State politics.

His early roles in government saw him serve as Commissioner for Education in Rivers State from 1999 to 2003, and subsequently as Commissioner for Sports between 2003 and 2007. These positions laid the foundation for what observers have described as a pragmatic and people-focused leadership style. According to reports by City People Magazine, his tenure in these ministries was marked by visible administrative reforms and developmental initiatives, earning him recognition and honours within political and social circles.
Senator Onyesoh’s legislative journey reached a defining moment in 2023 when he emerged as the first indigene of Etche to represent Rivers East Senatorial District at the Senate under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Since his inauguration into the National Assembly of Nigeria in June 2023, he has steadily built a reputation anchored on infrastructure development, education advocacy, and youth empowerment.
In April 2026, he was appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, a strategic role that places him at the forefront of oversight on federal infrastructure, particularly road construction and maintenance across the country. Prior to this appointment, he chaired the Senate Committee on Federal Character and Inter-Governmental Affairs, where he championed inclusiveness and equity in public service.

A notable milestone in his legislative record is the sponsorship of the Federal Character Commission Act (Amendment) Bill, 2025, aimed at strengthening transparency and fairness in government recruitment processes. His oversight functions have also extended to key national institutions, including the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
At the constituency level, Senator Onyesoh has prioritized human capital development, with initiatives focused on youth employment, empowerment programmes, and capacity-building across Rivers East. Constituents and political observers alike have credited him with maintaining consistent engagement and delivering people-oriented representation.
Further underscoring his political relevance, Senator Onyesoh has declared his intention to seek re-election ahead of the 2027 general elections, having obtained nomination forms under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The move signals a new phase in his political career as he seeks to consolidate on what supporters describe as impactful representation.

Speaking on his re-election bid, the lawmaker expressed gratitude to his constituents for their continued support, noting that their confidence remains the driving force behind his commitment to service. He pledged to deepen development efforts and expand opportunities across the senatorial district through inclusive and sustainable policies.
