REAL REASONS SUNNY-UNACHUKWU JOHN ESQ. REMAINS THE SOLE FAVOURABLE CANDIDATE FOR MBAIKE 2027
The race to secure effective leadership in the Federal House of Representatives is intensifying ahead of the National Assembly elections scheduled for 16 January 2027. Viable options now rest with those who have stepped forward to seek the mandate of the people of Mbaitoli/Ikeduru Federal Constituency, popularly known as Mbaike.
At the forefront stands Sunny-Unachukwu John Esq., the candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the Mbaike Federal Constituency in the 2027 general election. He presents a compelling alternative. He is the son of Chief Sunny Unachukwu, a well-trained Journalist, former Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Imo State Council in the 1980s and Bureau Chief of the Nigerian Herald Newspapers in Owerri during the administration of Chief Samuel Onunaka Mbakwe Ph.D elected Governor of Imo State. Chief Unachukwu contributed significantly to the development of the newly created Old Imo State and later served as an astute Trade Unionist and community leader in the Customary jurisdiction of Ikeduru Local Government Area.
He is followed by Rt. Hon. Akarachi Etinosa Amadi of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the 31-year-old lawmaker and son of Elder Charles Chukwuemeka Amadi (popularly known as Charlvon), leader of the APC in the Owerri Senatorial Zone. Amadi was declared winner of the controversial 2023 election for the Federal seat, defeating the then Labour Party candidate and popular Ace comedian Hon. Uche Ogbuagu, whose strong showing at the ballot boxes was not reflected in the final announcement.
A youthful and humble lawyer trained at one of South Africa’s leading universities, Sunny-Unachukwu John Esq.has distinguished himself through hard work in legal practice and business. In the 2023 general election he contested the Ikeduru State Constituency seat on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He was, however, a victim of the superior political firepower and manoeuvres of the APC, which saw his results upturned against the clear wishes of the electorate who had freely given him their mandate at the polls.
In the aftermath of that contest, the people of Mbaitoli/Ikeduru Federal Constituency called on him to seek the Federal seat under the NDC, which has His Excellency Peter Obi as its Presidential flagbearer.
Several parties, including the NDC, APC,ADC and PDP, are fielding candidates for the same Mbaitoli/Ikeduru seat. A majority of the frontline contestants hail from Ikeduru district. These include Sunny-Unachukwu John Esq. of the NDC, Rt. Hon. Akarachi Etinosa Amadi of the APC, and Hon. Uche Ogbuagu of the PDP, a graduate of Mass Communication and an accomplished stand-up comedian who represented Ikeduru State Constituency in the Imo State House of Assembly from 2019 to 2023. During that tenure he served as Majority Leader after defecting from the PDP to the APC. Hon. Uche Ogbuagu is a native of Akabo Autonomous Community in IKEDURU, the same community that produced Hon. Bethel Amadi, who represented Mbaitoli/Ikeduru Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives from 2003 to 2015 under the PDP (winning three successive terms) before going on to serve as President of the Pan-African Parliament from 2012 to 2015 before his untimely death.

Rep. Akarachi Etinosa Amadi, a trained Engineer from Eziama town in Ikeduru Local Government Area, is still learning the ropes of lawmaking, which is not his area of training, and represents the Ikeduru East District. Sunny-Unachukwu John Esq. hails from Iho Dimeze Autonomous Community in the Ikeduru West District. By the established alignment of political offices and the unwritten understanding among stakeholders of the Mbaitoli/Ikeduru Federal Constituency, Ikeduru district is serving its final four-year slot in the current cycle. After the 2027–2031 term, Mbaitoli Local Government Area is expected to take its turn presenting the candidate for the 2031–2035 electoral cycle.
By this logic, the candidate from Iho Dimeze Autonomous Community—equipped with the mental capacity, legal training and respected pedigree of a son whose father was both a well trained veteran journalist and astute Trade Unionist—stands as the most suitably qualified to represent the constituency in the Federal House of Representatives in Abuja from 16 January 2027.
The contest is not about the distribution of ad-hoc palliatives after the collection of constituency project allocations by those currently in office. It is about the agility to make laws that will raise the living standards of the people of Mbaike through legacy projects and overall legislation. Since the return to real democratic governance in Nigeria, no son or daughter of Iho Dimeze Autonomous Community has emerged as a candidate or elected representative on the platform of any major political party for significant elective offices in Ikeduru Local Government Area or the broader Mbaitoli/Ikeduru Federal Constituency. This exclusion persists despite Iho Dimeze serving as the headquarters of Ikeduru Local Government Council for decades and despite the community’s unique historical burden.
Iho Dimeze Autonomous Community holds a unique place in Nigerian Petroleum history as the site of Shell D’Arcy’s first deep exploration well in the country. In September 1951 the company drilled the Ihuo-1 well (also spelled Iho) near Owerri in present-day Ikeduru Local Government Area. The well was spudded around September 1951, drilled to approximately 11,228 feet, and later abandoned as a dry hole in October 1952.
Between 1951 and 1956 Shell D’Arcy drilled about eighteen exploration, appraisal and development wells across southern Nigeria. Archival land-rental agreements from 1951–1954 confirm that the company operated on sites in the Ikeduru/Iho area, paying compensation and rent, while Owerri served as an important early operational base known as “Shell Camp.” Although local accounts and community narratives from Iho Dimeze rightly highlight this pioneering exploratory activity, mainstream historical and company records treat the well as dry, with no commercial production ever coming from it. Commercial quantities of oil were later discovered at Oloibiri in 1956. The Ihuo-1 well involved the use of hazardous chemicals, dynamite, and other materials associated with early oil exploration. Local accounts maintain that the long-term environmental and health consequences of these operations—including exposure to radioactive elements and the heavy impact of explosives—have contributed to population depletion, elevated mortality, and lasting hardship for the people of Iho Dimeze, all without adequate compensation or remediation. Till today, Iho Dimeze Autonomous Community continues to suffer from these long-term devastating negative effects.

This historical sacrifice has not translated into political inclusion. While other communities in Ikeduru and Mbaitoli have produced successive representatives at the Local Government, State Assembly, and Federal levels, Iho Dimeze has remained systematically sidelined across party lines—whether APC, PDP, Labour Party, or others—since the advent of the Fourth Republic.
The current representation under Hon. Akarachi Etinosa Amadi (APC), who hails from Eziama in Ikeduru East, has further highlighted the gap between available resources and tangible outcomes for the constituency. As the member for Mbaitoli/Ikeduru Federal Constituency, Amadi draws substantial amount of allocations for constituency projects and empowerment programmes. Yet the scale of ad-hoc palliative empowerment and project delivery visible on the ground has been widely viewed as not commensurate with the volume of humongous funds allocated for such purposes. Large-scale public events featuring transformers, vehicles, cash gifts, and other items have been organised, but many constituents continue to question whether these interventions fully reflect the quantum of resources appropriated for the development of the Federal constituency.
This combination of historical environmental cost, political exclusion of Iho Dimeze, and perceived shortfalls in the translation of federal allocations into lasting constituency impact underscores the demand for a more balanced and competent representation. A candidate from Iho Dimeze, equipped with legal training and rooted in the community that has long paid a silent price for Nigeria’s early oil history, is increasingly seen as the logical choice to correct this imbalance in the 2027 elections.
The people of Mbaike Federal Constituency deserve positive change in their representation at the National Assembly in 2027. Sunny-Unachukwu John Esq, is best positioned to fill that role for Mbaitoli/Ikeduru as true legislative representation demands real holestic legacy development and not ad-hoc palliatives for the optics.
