RIVERS STATE IN HOLDING PATTERN AS 2027 GUBER RACE AWAITS WIKE’S SIGNAL
In a state of over six million people and Nigeria’s foremost oil and gas hub, the political atmosphere in Rivers State remains unusually calm—almost eerily so—despite the official lift of campaign activities slated for April 26, 2026.
Unlike the feverish build-up that defined the 2022 pre-election season ahead of the 2023 general elections—when aspirants crisscrossed the state selling ideas and forging alliances—the current terrain is marked by a deafening silence. At the center of this quiet storm stands the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, whose political dominance appears to have frozen open contestation across party lines.
Wike’s influence, observers say, stretches beyond the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), reaching deep into the All Progressives Congress (APC) structure in the state, reportedly steered by party leader Chief Tony Okocha. The result is a political landscape where ambition is measured not by popularity or ideas, but by proximity to Wike’s nod.
Caught in this web is the incumbent governor, Siminalayi Fubara, whose strained relationship with his political benefactor has cast uncertainty over his chances of securing a party ticket—particularly within the APC—for a second term in 2027.
Behind the scenes, power blocs are already aligning. The once-dominant Grassroots Development Initiative (GDI), now rebranded as the Rainbow Coalition Movement under the Renewed Hope Ambassadors and led by Ambassador Desmond Akawor, is widely seen as a key mobilization platform firmly under Wike’s strategic command—positioning it as a decisive force in determining party tickets across the board.
Speculation had earlier swirled around Boma Iyaye, Executive Director of Finance and Administration at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), as a potential successor to Fubara. However, that narrative lost steam after the March 31, 2026 deadline requiring public office holders to resign before contesting elections passed without Iyaye stepping down. He subsequently distanced himself from the rumours with an official disclaimer.
The intrigue deepened following recent APC and PDP national congresses in Abuja, where delegates from both parties paid a joint courtesy visit to Wike at his private residence. In a move that has only heightened suspense, the FCT Minister publicly declared that he has not anointed any candidate for the 2027 elections.
Yet, political undercurrents suggest otherwise. Emerging whispers point to Kingsley O. Chinda, Minority Leader of the House of Representatives representing Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency—and a political ally from Wike’s home base—as a possible contender for the governorship seat.
Central to this unfolding drama is the influential Rivers State Elders Council, a powerful consultative bloc widely believed to operate under Wike’s sphere of influence. The council, led by respected statesman Ferdinand Alabraba, includes notable figures such as O. C. J. Okocha, Chidi Awuse, and Emma Anyanwu—all of whom are expected to play pivotal roles in shaping the eventual emergence of candidates.
Insiders insist that any aspirant eyeing the Brick House must first pass through this council, reinforcing the belief that delegate decisions at both APC and PDP primaries will ultimately align with Wike’s preference.
The political influence of Chief Felix Obuah alias Go Round will be felt in the political build up in Rivers State with alignment of FCT Abuja Minister Nyesom Wike.
Still, a wildcard remains—the possible intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. As national leader of the APC, Tinubu could tilt the balance by endorsing Governor Fubara for a second term, potentially overriding local political calculations. Such a compromise, analysts say, may leave Wike to consolidate influence by determining key positions such as deputy governor and state assembly leadership.
For Wike the Rainbow Coalition is targeted towards having a rancour free electioneering outcome devoid of killings, mayhem and waste of human lives as Rivers State usually have had in the past.
As the countdown to 2027 continues, one reality looms large: in Rivers State, political aspiration without loyalty—to both Wike and Tinubu—may be a journey to nowhere.
