A RARE OPPORTUNITY FOR PATIENTS BATTLING LIVER AND PANCREATIC CANCERS AS OAUTHC PREPARES FOR SPECIALIZED SURGERIES WITH INTERNATIONAL EXPERTS

The Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has announced plans to host a specialised surgical programme aimed at providing treatment for patients suffering from complex liver, pancreatic and biliary diseases, particularly cancer-related conditions.

The initiative is expected to bring together visiting hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) and liver transplant surgeons from the United States and Canada who will collaborate with Nigerian specialists to perform advanced procedures and evaluate patients requiring complex surgical interventions.

The programme is being coordinated by renowned surgical oncologist, Olusegun Isaac Alatise, a Professor of Surgery at OAUTHC, who called on medical practitioners and health institutions to refer suitable patients who may benefit from the specialised treatment opportunity.

According to information circulated among medical professionals, the surgical mission forms part of ongoing preparations to strengthen liver transplantation services at the Ile-Ife-based tertiary hospital. During the exercise, teams of local and international surgeons are expected to carry out complex operations involving the liver, pancreas and biliary system using advanced surgical technologies supplied by the German medical equipment company ERBE Elektromedizin.

Patients being considered for the procedures are expected to present detailed medical investigations including triple-phase contrast CT scans of the chest and abdominopelvic region as well as abdominal MRI scans to enable specialists determine their eligibility for surgery.

Clinical assessment and selection of patients will be conducted during scheduled surgical clinics ahead of the planned procedures. The initiative is being widely circulated among medical practitioners to ensure that eligible patients are identified and referred early.

Medical experts say the programme represents a rare opportunity for Nigerians suffering from complicated cancer-related surgical conditions affecting the liver, pancreas and biliary tract to access highly specialised care within the country while benefiting from the expertise of international surgeons.

The programme is also expected to enhance capacity building for Nigerian doctors as visiting experts will work alongside local surgeons and allow referring physicians to observe and participate in the procedures.

The surgical mission is being organised in collaboration with the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment, the Nigerian Cancer Society and the Ministerial Committee on Liver Transplantation.

Although details of the programme appear to have been circulated mainly within professional medical networks rather than through a formal public announcement, available information suggests that the initiative forms part of broader efforts to expand cancer treatment capacity and liver transplant services in Nigeria.

Health professionals say patients diagnosed with resectable liver, pancreatic or biliary cancers and who are medically fit for surgery may particularly benefit from the opportunity, which could significantly improve access to life-saving specialised treatment.
