PRESIDENT TINUBU NOMINATES GENERAL CHRISTOPHER MUSA AS NEW MINISTER OF DEFENCE
In a decisive move to bolster Nigeria’s security architecture, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated General Christopher Gwabin Musa as the new Minister of Defence, succeeding Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, who resigned earlier this week on health grounds.
The nomination, formally conveyed in a letter to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, comes amid heightened attention to national security and the strategic reshaping of Nigeria’s defence leadership. President Tinubu expressed unwavering confidence in General Musa’s capacity to lead the Ministry of Defence, describing him as a “veteran soldier whose experience, discipline, and vision will strengthen Nigeria’s defence institutions.”
Speaking on the appointment, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, said:
“General Musa brings decades of exemplary service and strategic expertise to the Ministry of Defence. We are confident that under his leadership, Nigeria’s security architecture will be more robust and responsive to the challenges of our time.”

*A Life of Distinguished Service*
Born in Sokoto in 1967, General Christopher Musa’s journey to the pinnacle of Nigeria’s military leadership has been marked by dedication, intellect, and courage. He completed his primary and secondary education in Sokoto before proceeding to the College of Advanced Studies in Zaria, graduating in 1986. That same year, he gained admission to the Nigerian Defence Academy, earning a Bachelor of Science degree upon graduation in 1991.
Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant into the Nigerian Army in 1991, General Musa embarked on a career characterized by notable leadership and operational excellence. His early appointments included General Staff Officer 1, Training/Operations at HQ 81 Division, and Commanding Officer of the 73 Battalion. He also served as Assistant Director, Operational Requirements at the Department of Army Policy and Plans, and Infantry Representative/Member of the Training Team at HQ Nigerian Army Armour Corps.
Over the years, General Musa held key operational commands, including Deputy Chief of Staff, Training/Operations at the Headquarters Infantry Centre and Corps, and Commander of Sector 3, both for Operation Lafiya Dole and the Multinational Joint Task Force in the Lake Chad Region. In 2021, he was appointed Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, before taking command of the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps. His distinguished service culminated in his appointment as Chief of Defence Staff in 2023 by President Tinubu.
Among his accolades, General Musa won the prestigious Colin Powell Award for Soldiering in 2012, underscoring his professional excellence and commitment to national service.
Now, at 58, General Musa steps into the political and strategic spotlight as Minister of Defence, tasked with leading Nigeria’s armed forces during a period of complex security challenges and regional instability. Analysts note that his appointment reflects President Tinubu’s priority on experienced, battle-tested leadership in safeguarding Nigeria’s national interests.
As the Senate prepares to review the nomination, the nation watches closely, hopeful that General Musa’s proven military acumen will translate into a fortified and responsive defence ministry.
