Rt. Hon. Omosede Gabriella Igbinedion, one of Nigeria’s most prominent female politicians and the youngest woman elected into the House of Representatives in 2015, is seeking a third term as the representative of Ovia Federal Constituency in Edo State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The legal practitioner, entrepreneur and philanthropist first made history in 2015 when, at the age of 34, she emerged as the youngest female member of Nigeria’s 8th House of Representatives, representing Ovia North-East/Ovia South-West Federal Constituency under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). She later joined the APC and returned to the National Assembly after winning the 2025 by-election conducted to fill the vacancy created by the election of Dennis Idahosa as Deputy Governor of Edo State. She was sworn in on October 8, 2025.

Born on May 6, 1981, Omosede is the daughter of renowned Benin businessman and philanthropist, Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin Kingdom. She attended Igbinedion Education Centre in Benin City before proceeding to Cambridge College in the United Kingdom for her A-Levels. She earned a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree from the University of Kent in 2003 and a Master’s degree in Diplomatic Studies from the University of Westminster in 2005. She was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2007 after completing her studies at the Nigerian Law School.

During her first tenure in the House of Representatives from 2015 to 2019, she served as Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on House Services and was a member of several strategic committees, including Local Content, Aviation, Downstream Petroleum, Federal Capital Territory, Judiciary, Rural Development and Women in Parliament.

Since returning to the National Assembly in 2025, Igbinedion has resumed legislative activities, including sponsoring a Motion of Urgent Public Importance that received consideration on the floor of the House. The motion focused on matters affecting her constituents and reinforced her advocacy for development and improved public welfare in Ovia Federal Constituency.

Throughout her legislative career, she has consistently advocated improved infrastructure, youth empowerment, women’s inclusion in governance, rural development, better local content participation, and stronger international partnerships to attract development projects to her constituency. She has also represented Nigeria at international parliamentary engagements, including meetings of women parliamentarians under the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

Supporters describe her as an experienced legislator whose parliamentary experience, accessibility and constituency engagement have strengthened her political profile. Her campaign for the 2027 general election is built around the message of continuity, experience, leadership and results, urging voters in Ovia Federal Constituency to renew her mandate for another term in the Green Chamber.

With the 2027 elections approaching, political observers regard the Ovia Federal Constituency contest as one of the key legislative races in Edo State, with Igbinedion seeking to consolidate her legislative record and continue representing the constituency in Nigeria’s House of Representatives.
