Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has openly acknowledged that his continued stewardship of the state was secured by the timely presidential intervention of President Ahmed Bola Tinubu, describing the episode as a life-saving moment for his administration.
Speaking at the combined 37th and 38th Convocation Ceremony of the Rivers State University (RSU) in Port Harcourt on Saturday, December 6, 2025, Governor Fubara reflected on the stormy political season that nearly destabilised governance in the state.
“Like you said, a report was given to us. But you all know what happened in the life of our administration. It is only by the special grace of God, the special favour from Mr President, that we are standing here still as the ones presiding over the affairs of Rivers State,” he declared.

The Governor assured the university community that his administration remains unwavering in advancing academic excellence, expansion of infrastructure, improved research funding and modern learning tools.
“We remain committed to funding the university and ensuring that it continues to function at the level expected of a first-class institution. Education remains the backbone of our development agenda, and Rivers State University will continue to receive the attention it deserves,” he stated.
On arrival, Governor Fubara was received at the university ceremonial arena by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, who conducted him through the lineup of academic dignitaries before the procession commenced.

The event also featured the presence of eminent personalities including:HRH Justice Dr. Sidi Bage Mohammad, Chancellor, RSU, Hon. Okey Wali, SAN, Pro-Chancellor & Chairman, Governing Council,His Majesty, Alfred Diete-Spiff, Amanyanabo of Twon Brass,Senator John Azuta Mbata, President General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo and Dr. Sam Sam Jaja, former National Deputy Chairman of the PDP.

A notable highlight was the recognition of Dr. Benibo Anabraba, Secretary to the Rivers State Government, who received his academic honour as one of the graduands.

Beyond the presentation of degrees and honours, the convocation doubled as a moment of political affirmation and institutional reassurance. Governor Fubara’s remarks signalled a renewed pledge to shield educational institutions from political turbulence while ensuring that RSU remains a beacon of academic distinction in Nigeria.
The ceremony gathered a rich blend of scholars, royalty, policymakers, industry stalwarts, diplomats, and proud parents who witnessed the conferment of degrees upon thousands of graduating students now poised to enter national service, technological innovation, professional leadership and civic duty.
As the institution marked another historic session, the presence of the Governor, the symbolic alliances displayed, and the gratitude expressed toward the Presidency positioned the convocation as not just an academic ritual but a landmark in Rivers State’s political and educational journey.
