BREAKING: Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru Resigns Amid Health Concerns

In a sudden and significant development, Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from his position with immediate effect. The resignation, conveyed in a letter dated December 1, was formally addressed to President Bola Tinubu.

Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed the resignation to Channels Television on Monday, revealing that Badaru stepped down due to health reasons. Onanuga added that President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and expressed his appreciation for the minister’s dedicated service to the nation.

Sources within the presidency indicate that President Tinubu is expected to notify the Senate of Badaru’s successor later this week, signaling a swift move to ensure continuity in Nigeria’s defence leadership.

Alhaji Badaru, 63, previously served as a two-term governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023 before his appointment as Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023. His resignation comes at a critical juncture, following the federal government’s declaration of a national security emergency. Authorities are expected to provide further details on the scope and implementation of the emergency measures in the coming days.

Political analysts suggest that Badaru’s departure could have significant implications for Nigeria’s defence and security architecture, raising questions about continuity and strategic planning amid ongoing security challenges nationwide.
