MAYOR OF PORT HARCOURT ENDORSES SPECIAL RESERVATION OF SEAT FOR WOMEN IN GOVERNANCE
The Nigerian League of Women Voters (NILOWV) has recorded a significant milestone in its advocacy for women’s inclusion in governance. Dr. Sam Kalagbor, the Sole Administrator of Port Harcourt City Council and Mayor of Port Harcourt, has endorsed the special reservation of seats for women in governance at all levels.

A Step towards Inclusive Governance
During a courtesy visit to the Mayor’s office, Dr. (Mrs.) Ruth Davies Ibiamu, Chairperson of NILOWV, presented a request symbolized by a placard titled “Special Reservation of Seats for Women.” The group advocated for giving women elective positions to enhance their participation in bringing democratic governance closer to the people.

Mayor Kalagbor’s Endorsement
The Mayor of Port Harcourt, Dr. Sam Kalagbor, wholeheartedly endorsed the special seat reservation for women, stating, “In my capacity as the Administrator of Port Harcourt Local Government Council of Rivers State, I endorse the Special Seat Reservation for Women at all levels of government in Nigeria.”

NILOWV’s Mission
The Nigerian League of Women Voters is a non-partisan, non-profit organization that aims to promote democracy, educate voters, and advocate for social and political change in Nigeria. The group’s motto, “Together we can, Yes we can,” reflects its commitment to empowering women and promoting inclusive governance.

Importance of Women’s Participation
Dr. (Mrs.) Ruth Davies Ibiamu emphasized the importance of women’s participation in politics, noting that it is a game-changer for democratic stability. Courtesy Visit to Dr. Abiye Precious Sekibo

The NILOWV team also paid a courtesy visit to Dr. Abiye Precious Sekibo, former Secretary to the State Government and former Minister of Transportation. Dr. Ibiamu reiterated the values and roles women play in the democratic emergence of leaders by casting their votes and asked for support for the inclusivity of women into elective positions in Nigeria.
