MEET RIVERS STATE POLICE COMMISSIONER TUNJI DISU
WHAT NO ONE CAN TELL YOU ABOUT HIM REVEALED
The appointment of Tunji Disu as Commissioner of Police for Rivers State Police Command has excited a lot of people with positive reviews and it has restored confidence on the role of Police in maintaining peace, law and order in the society with the arrival for the 3rd time of a man who knows Rivers state security architecture at the tips of his fingers. First he served in the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad SARS in Rivers state later he was drafted as Deputy Head of the Unit at the State CID in Rivers State Police Command where he has now returned as substantial Commissioner of Police. He therefore knows the terrain and security landscape of Rivers state Nigeria’s main hydrocarbon extractive industry hub in Africa.
Born Olatunji Disu on April 17th, 1966 in serene Lagos island in Lagos state Nigeria. The man who is today the number one Police officer in Rivers state began his early education at Mayflower Junior School in Ikenne, Ogun state where Tai Solarin, a disciplinarian once held sway. He further went to Saint Gregory’s College in Lagos and completed his Secondary School education at Pobuna Secondary Grammar School in Epe, Lagos state Nigeria.
With great zeal in earning further knowledge in western education he gained admission at Lagos State University where he pursued a Bachelors of Arts Degree in English language Education. Poised to acquire exposure to world views he applied for a Postgraduate Diploma in International Relations and Strategic Studies from Lagos State University. Later he pursued a Certificate programme in Personal Protection from the United Kingdom and topped it with a masters Degree in Public Administration from Adekunle Ajasin University in Akungba, Ondo State South West Nigeria.
The well-focused Police officer Tunji Disu is a man whose quest for professionalism has taken him to have taken a number of professional courses both domestically and abroad, including courses on small Arms smuggling in Botswana, Internet Fraud Training at Cambridge University in the UK, another being that of Strategic Leadership Command at the Police Staff College in Jos, as he capped it with study of FORENSIC INVESTIGATIONS and CRIMINAL INTELLIGENCE at the University of Lagos. He has continued to improve himself with the study of Information and Communication Technology -ICT related Courses with which tools have deployed in his services to the Nigerian Police Force.
Before now, he joined the Nigerian Police Force in 1992 as a Cadet ASP after his training at Nigerian Police Academy Wuddil Kano Kano state Nigeria. Over the years in his service records he has served as the Officer in Charge of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in Ondo and Oyo States including Rivers State. For him, he worked and served the incumbent President of Nigeria distinguished Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the Aide-De-Camp ADC while he was the governor of Lagos State. Thereafter he was appointed on merit as the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State.
Given his avowed integrity of service to his fatherland Nigeria he has been well groomed in the Police Service administrative technical know-how as he had served as Deputy Commissioner of Police at the Force Headquarters in Abuja’s Department of Operations, here he was on the service line of the Day-To-Day operations of the entire Police Forces Intelligence. Thus, he was drafted to the former Rapid Response Squad (RRS) as the Commander for the State of Lagos. It is also on record that Police Commissioner Tunji Disu was credited with repositioning, improving, and rebranding the RRS as a model security outfit in Nigeria. Today, he is celebrated as a noble police Officer whose track record of service is superb and intimidating.
Given his engagements in international assignments as a Police officer he has distinguished himself and has served as the Commander of the Nigerian Police Delegation to the African Union (AU) Peacekeeping Mission in the Sudanese region of Darfur. This was after he had served as the Deputy Head of the Unit at the State Criminal Investigative Department, SCID in Rivers State.
This thoroughbred Nigeria today belongs to numerous professional organizations, including the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management, the Nigeria Institute of Public Relations, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police and other professional bodies of note.
His nomination as the new Head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) came at a time when his predecessor in that office Embattled Abba Kyari was removed due to his infractions with the law when Abba Kyari was indicted by United States of America’s Department of Justice in the most celebrated Fraud involving Raymond Abbas popularly known as Huspuppi. Here he took his time in rendering diligent services to the Nigerian Police Force.
He is an all-round Police Officer who engages in sports as a tool to rejuvenate and keep fit to carry out his responsibilities as a noble Police I Officer of note. Today he is a Veteran Sportsman having been Chairman of Police Judo Association and Chairman of Lagos State Judo Association. He has won laurels in the sports arena with the following two Gold Medals at the Nigerian Police Games, a Silver Medal that he won at the Armed Forces Games. Again, he won two Gold Medals he earned during the National Sports Festival in Bauchi, in 1990. He won a Gold Medal at the Nigerian Police Veteran Championship, in 2021.
Police Commissioner Tunji Disu is a married family man with children having a well articulated programme for the well-being of Rivers state people and residents and for the business community.
